Contemporary art in the castle

MIAC - International Museum of Contemporary Art

The MIAC opened in 1976 inside Castillo de San José, an 18th-century fortress recovered to house contemporary art. Its rooms bring together works by Canarian, national and international artists, along with temporary exhibitions and cultural activities.

The route lets visitors discover the collection within the castle’s historic architecture and contemplate the bay of Arrecife from its upper terrace.

Origin

From fortress to cultural centre

In 1976, César Manrique proposed that the Cabildo de Lanzarote recover Castillo de San José, which had lost its defensive function and stood abandoned. The intervention preserved the character of the old bastion and adapted its spaces to house the International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC).

A restaurant integrated into the castle

The main architectural addition to the project was the restaurant, built at the rear of the fortress and connected to the museum by an interior staircase with organic forms. A side exterior entrance also allows direct access to the restaurant, independently of the MIAC route.

The harbour landscape

The interior incorporated elements linked to Manrique’s language: wood, curved lines, bottles transformed into lamps and shelves inspired by the dovecotes of traditional architecture. The large glass wall opened the dining room towards Puerto de Naos, making Arrecife’s harbour landscape part of the space.

The Castle’s cuisine

The Castillo de San José Restaurant offers Canarian cuisine with a local base, reinterpreted through contemporary techniques. The menu brings together starters, seafood dishes, meats and desserts, with ingredients and preparations linked to different parts of Lanzarote.

Local produce and Canarian flavours

Wrinkled potatoes with mojos, island cheeses and salmon from Ahumadería de Uga share the menu with brothy carabinero rice from La Santa, glazed octopus with batata yema del Jable and Canarian tuna. The proposal also includes grilled vegetables, rice dishes and meat dishes.

Lanzarote wines

The wine list gives a prominent place to the island’s wineries, with references made from Malvasía Volcánica and Listán Negro, as well as sparkling and sweet wines from Lanzarote.
