Science and volcanoes
Casa de los Volcanes Museum
Located within Jameos del Agua, the Casa de los Volcanes Museum extends the visit with immersive resources and virtual reality. Its rooms help explain the La Corona volcanic tube, the Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago Geopark and planetary analogues: landscapes on Earth that can be compared with other environments in the Solar System.
The visit takes around 60 minutes and includes a room dedicated to César Manrique, created in collaboration with the César Manrique Foundation.
Cuisine among volcanic rock
Jameos del Agua Restaurant
In the Jameo Chico, the restaurant occupies a chamber within the La Corona volcanic tube. Its menu combines local produce with contemporary dishes, such as tortilla conejera or wreckfish served with mojo sauces and Canarian wrinkled potatoes.
During the visit, the Vista Lago Bar-Cafeteria offers a place to pause beside the lake of the blind crabs. La Galería provides another stop at the end of the route.
Every Friday
Noches de Jameos
This experience combines an evening visit, dinner and a concert. As daylight fades, the lighting offers a different view of how César Manrique worked with the rock, water and gardens.
Dinner brings seasonal produce to the table and can be paired with Lanzarote wines. The evening ends with a concert beside the interior lake, accompanied by the acoustics of the volcanic chamber.
Origins
The La Corona volcanic tube
Jameos del Agua forms part of the La Corona volcanic tube, created around 5,000 years ago by volcanic activity. This underground conduit extends from the base of the cone to beyond the coastline. Partial collapses of its roof opened the jameos, a word of Guanche origin used for these natural openings.
The same volcanic system contains the Cueva de los Verdes and continues beneath the ocean through the Atlantis Tunnel.
The first Centre
In 1968, the first Centre of Art, Culture and Tourism created by César Manrique opened here. The intervention, completed in 1977, shapes the route around the form of the volcanic tube itself. Paths, platforms, gardens and rest areas make it possible to move through the chamber while keeping rock, water and light at the centre of the experience.
A collective work
Although the project is associated with César Manrique, Jameos del Agua is also the result of the work of Jesús Soto and numerous craftspeople, technicians and workers from Lanzarote. Their contribution can be seen in the use of local materials, the attention paid to textures and the solutions adapted to each section of the volcanic tube.
A protected environment
The surrounding area forms part of the Los Jameos Site of Scientific Interest, a designation that protects the subterranean aquatic habitat and the species that live there.
What to see
- The lake and the tides: The lake forms as seawater filters through fissures in the volcanic tube. Its level follows the tides and can reach the access walkway during spring tides.
- The blind crab: The small white dots on the bottom are specimens of Munidopsis polymorpha, an endemic species adapted to darkness. To protect its habitat, do not throw coins or other objects into the water.
- The walkway beside the lake: It crosses the chamber without disturbing the aquatic habitat and reveals the relationship between rock, water and light.
- The Jameo Grande: The darkness of the cave opens onto an outdoor garden with palm trees, fig trees and cacti. The white pool and leaning palm tree show how the design adapts to the basalt.
- The furniture: Chairs, tables and lamps form part of the Centre’s design. Some pieces incorporate buoys and fishing traps transformed into lamps or containers for ferns.
- The Auditorium: The volcanic chamber provides the walls, vault and acoustics, while the seats follow the natural slope of the ground. At the entrance, a lamp made of metal rods recalls Leonardo da Vinci’s illustrations for De divina proportione.
- The Jameo de la Cazuela: Located behind the Auditorium stage, it contains two interior waterfalls and can only be visited as part of the Insólita Experience.
What to do
- Finish the route at La Galería: At the end of the visit, the bar offers a place for an aperitif among the volcanic rock.
- See the entrance to the Atlantis Tunnel: At the back of the restaurant, you can make out one of the entrances to the section of the volcanic tube that continues beneath the ocean.
- Have lunch inside the volcanic tube: The restaurant combines local produce with contemporary dishes and Lanzarote wines.
- Book Noches de Jameos: Every Friday, this experience combines an evening visit, dinner and a concert beside the interior lake, with a classic or vegan menu.
- Access reserved areas: The small-group Insólita Experience visits the interior of the Auditorium and the Jameo de la Cazuela with a guide, a local aperitif and admission to the Casa de los Volcanes Museum.
- Visit the Casa de los Volcanes Museum: Its immersive and virtual-reality experiences help explain the La Corona volcanic tube, Lanzarote’s volcanic origins and planetary analogues.
Visitor guide
- Access: The general visit does not require a date or time reservation. With an online ticket, you can enter by showing the QR code on your phone.
- Visit duration: The visit takes approximately 60 minutes. Allow another 60 minutes if you choose admission with the Casa de los Volcanes Museum.
- Families: Pushchairs are not permitted; use a baby carrier during the route. Children aged 0 to 6 enter free of charge. The toilets are outside the cave and have baby-changing facilities.
- Clothing: Wear comfortable footwear, as the route runs over volcanic stone. In summer, bring sun protection, a hat and sunglasses for the outdoor areas.
- Photography: You may take photographs during the route. Drones are not permitted.
- Mobility: The shape of the volcanic tube, the changes in level and the stone paving limit accessibility along the general route. The Auditorium has a stairlift platform providing access to the seating area during events; this does not make the full route accessible.
- Pets: Pets are not permitted, except assistance dogs under Law 3/2017 of 26 April.
- Food and drink: Outside food and drink are not permitted. The Centre has a bar-cafeteria and restaurant, subject to their opening hours.
Important information
- During spring tides, water may cover part of the crossing and you may need to remove your shoes.
- Do not throw coins or other objects into the lake. Bathing or entering the lake and pool is not permitted, and volcanic formations must not be touched.
