Science, volcanoes and exploration

Casa de los Volcanes Museum

An interactive museum that reveals the secrets of Lanzarote’s volcanic origins through immersive experiences, science and technology.

Origins

The Casa de los Volcanes is a museum that honours the transformative power of volcanoes. Innovative in character, it combines tradition and technology, original equipment and advanced resources to offer an immersive experience that enriches a visit to Jameos del Agua. Its museum design has received international recognition with a nomination for the European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA 2025), one of Europe’s most prestigious museum awards, which recognises institutions for their excellence, innovation and ability to inspire visitors.

The Casa de los Volcanes Museum has ten rooms organised around three main themes: the geological formation of the La Corona volcanic tube and the transformation of Jameos del Agua by the artist César Manrique; the work carried out at the Casa de los Volcanes and the contents of the Lanzarote-Chinijo Archipelago Geopark; and Planetary Analogues, an exploration of the similarities between Lanzarote’s volcanic landscapes and the surface of Mars.

Geoscientific research

  • Geoscience Laboratory: Since 1986, it has recorded data on geodynamics, geomaterials and terrestrial analogues through three permanent observation modules. The data are received at Jameos del Agua and contribute to research at universities and scientific centres.
  • Rosa Lunar Room: It brings together a collection of rocks and minerals donated by Rosa Lunar, offering a closer look at the geological diversity beneath the surface.

César Manrique

  • César Manrique Room: Created in collaboration with the César Manrique Foundation, it explores the life, work and thinking of the artist who transformed Jameos del Agua by integrating his intervention into the volcanic tube.

La Corona volcanic tube

  • Volcanic formation: Explains how Lanzarote and the Canary Islands originated, how volcanic activity is monitored and which processes form craters, lava flows and lava tubes.
  • From volcano to sea: An immersive virtual-reality experience follows the La Corona tube from the volcano to its submerged section.
  • Atlantis Tunnel: Presents the underwater section of the volcanic tube and the marine species that live inside it.

Casa de los Volcanes and the Geopark

  • Museum history: Traces the work carried out by the Casa de los Volcanes, Spain’s first comprehensive volcanology museum.
  • UNESCO Global Geopark: Explains the geological value of Lanzarote and the Chinijo Archipelago and the reasons for their protection.

Planetary analogues

  • Landscapes for studying other planets: Explains why certain places on Earth make it possible to investigate geological processes similar to those on the Moon or Mars.
  • PANGAEA Programme: Shows how Lanzarote’s volcanic landscapes are used for astronauts’ geological training and preparation for future planetary missions.
