Origins
The history of Islote de Fermina begins on Arrecife's seafront. The port, fishing activity, small quays and islets emerging off the coast form part of the capital's urban memory. One of these stretches of land, opposite El Reducto beach, was known for many years as Islote del Quebrado.
Its current name comes from Fermina Santana Santana, a Lanzarote businesswoman and shipowner associated with boatbuilding in the early decades of the 20th century. In 1918, the Naval Command granted her permission to establish a shipyard on Islote del Quebrado, in La Destila, beside El Reducto beach. The sailing vessel La Fermina, the well-known El Rafael and other smaller boats were built there.
From then on, this part of Arrecife became associated with Fermina's name. It was not merely a decorative name, but a memory linked to maritime work, the shipbuilding trade and the city's relationship with its port.
In 1968, the company Protucasa launched several tourism projects in Lanzarote. Under the direction of Juan Marrero Portugués, it commissioned César Manrique to landscape Parque Islas Canarias, the gardens of the Gran Hotel and several areas on Islote de Fermina. The project belonged to a period when Arrecife was beginning to rethink its relationship with the coast.
During this period, the name Islote del Amor also became popular. The space was connected to the mainland by a pedestrian bridge beginning near the Arrecife Gran Hotel. At its eastern end lies La Punta del Callao, another place name associated with the Islote.
Designed by César Manrique in the 1970s and recently restored, Islote de Fermina is once again part of public life in Arrecife. Its history brings together maritime heritage, artistic intervention, public use and a new perspective on the bay.
What to see
- Arrecife Bay Interpretation Centre: a room devoted to understanding the capital's maritime environment and the city's historical relationship with its coastline.
- The pedestrian access bridge: it connects the Islote with Arrecife and marks the entrance to a space that forms part of the city's seafront.
- The Islote's outdoor space: a restored area beside the sea with open spaces, a terrace and points from which to observe the bay.
- César Manrique's imprint: the Islote was designed by Manrique in the 1970s and retains this understanding of the site as an open space between architecture, city and sea.
- Its relationship with El Reducto: the Islote stands opposite the area around El Reducto beach, one of the most recognisable parts of Arrecife's urban coastline.
- The saltwater pool: it forms part of the space, although it is currently closed for swimming.
Café and restaurant
The café-restaurant at Islote de Fermina has a terrace within the space itself. It accompanies everyday life on the Islote: a pause during a walk, lunch or dinner from Thursday to Saturday beside Arrecife's seafront.
