Volcanic gastronomy

El Diablo Restaurant

On the Islote de Hilario, El Diablo cooks meat and vegetables with heat rising from the subsoil. The grill sits above a five-metre well, where the earth’s natural temperature reaches around 250 degrees.

The dining room, conceived by César Manrique, opens onto views of the malpaís lava field through a large circular glass wall. Inside, the counters recall the socos of La Geria, a traditional way of protecting vines from the wind in Lanzarote.

Origin

Montañas del Fuego are the result of eruptions that took place in southern Lanzarote during the 18th and 19th centuries. Red craters, lava flows and ash fields reflect a transformation that changed the island forever.

Timanfaya National Park

Timanfaya National Park protects more than 5,100 hectares of volcanic origin, with one of the most representative examples of recent volcanism in the Canary Islands. Its value lies in the amount of material expelled and in the duration of the eruptions: six years, between 1730 and 1736, which transformed an essential part of Lanzarote.

Rising from the land is the Islote de Hilario, from where the view opens onto a sea of lava with more than 25 craters concentrated in just a few square kilometres. Beneath this area, the heat of the subsoil recalls that Timanfaya still preserves part of that energy.

The Route of the Volcanoes

César Manrique conceived the Route of the Volcanoes, a route of around 14 kilometres through the main core of the eruptions. The route is taken in a specially equipped coach and allows you to observe caves, craters, lava blankets and malpaís lava fields along a regulated road inside the National Park.

The audio narrative accompanies the visit and helps identify the forms left by volcanic activity.

El Diablo Restaurant

Manrique also gave shape to El Diablo Restaurant, a gastronomic space located on the Islote de Hilario and integrated into the volcanic surroundings. Its oven uses the earth’s own heat for grilling, over a five-metre well where the natural temperature reaches around 250 degrees.

The dining room opens onto the malpaís through a large circular glass wall. Outside, the geothermal demonstrations show how heat from the subsoil still rises towards the surface.

What to see

  • The sculpture of the Devil of Timanfaya: this symbol of the National Park welcomes you on the road to Montañas del Fuego.
  • The sea of craters: a landscape of textures and reddish, black and ochre colours.
  • A landscape for planetary training: Timanfaya has been chosen for its geological conditions to prepare part of astronauts’ training before planetary expeditions.
  • The view halfway along the Route of the Volcanoes: after a 180-degree turn and the return between two volcanoes, Montaña Rajada, Montaña Termesana, Montaña de la Vieja Gabriela, Pico Redondo, Montaña de Dos Picos, Montaña de la Mancha and, in the distance, Montaña de Enmedio and Montaña de la Cinta appear.
  • Valle de la Tranquilidad: its name refers to the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility, where Apollo 11 landed. Covered in warm ash, it opens one of the calmest scenes on the route.
  • The structure of El Diablo: the dining-room counters are designed in the likeness of the socos of La Geria, semicircular walls that protect vines from the wind and form one of Lanzarote’s most characteristic wine landscapes.
  • The restaurant lamps: made with hand-forged pans, they are another example of how Manrique incorporated everyday objects into the design of the space.
  • Jardín Muerto: located in the centre of the restaurant, this small glazed garden pays tribute to the legend of Hilario. On the volcanic ash appear the skeleton of a dromedary and the trunk of a dry, burned tree.

What to do

  • Follow the Route of the Volcanoes, an activity included in the ticket with an approximately 35-minute route guided in Spanish, English and German.
  • Observe the geothermal demonstrations on the Islote de Hilario, a direct way to see the heat still held by the subsoil.
  • See the restaurant oven and try meat or vegetables grilled with the earth’s natural heat.
  • End the visit with the most symbolic dessert on the menu: a chocolate brownie presented as a volcano.
  • Book the Insólita Experience, a guided small-group experience with access to spaces not included in the general visit.

Visitor guide

  • Access: Access to Montañas del Fuego is organised with an assigned time slot. When buying your ticket, you must select the visit time and arrive at the ticket office 15 minutes in advance.
  • Visit duration: Approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  • Families: Access is free for children under 7. The restaurant and cafeteria have high chairs. Access with a pushchair can be difficult; bringing a baby carrier is recommended.
  • Clothing: Comfortable clothing and footwear are recommended. In summer, between June and September, a cap or sun protection is advisable. In winter, between October and April, warm clothing is recommended, as this is a windy area.
  • Photography: We recommend photographing the geyser area, the natural oven, the Devil figure and the Route of the Volcanoes.
  • Mobility: The Route of the Volcanoes has adapted coaches.
  • Pets: Pets are not allowed, except assistance dogs under the terms set out in Law 3/2017 of 26 April on assistance dogs for people with disabilities in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands.

Important notes

To preserve this protected National Park, remain inside the vehicle from El Taro to the car park on the Islote de Hilario. Your cooperation helps conserve this environment.

In the Centre car park, located on the Islote de Hilario, take care when opening the car door. The slope may cause it to hit other vehicles.
