Mozaga, Lanzarote’s farming culture

Casa Museo del Campesino

Traditional architecture, rooms devoted to rural life and the Fecundidad sculpture shape César Manrique’s tribute to Lanzarote’s farming knowledge. In its patios, cisterns, threshing floors and wine presses, the Centre shows how housing, farming work and trades were organised on an island of little rain, wind and volcanic soils.

Origin

Located in the centre of Lanzarote, in the municipality of San Bartolomé, the Casa Museo del Campesino is César Manrique’s tribute to the island’s farming communities, who learned to work the land in demanding conditions.

The Casa Museo del Campesino offers a journey through traditional architecture, agriculture, crafts and gastronomy. The visit is completed by Fecundidad, an avant-garde work in which César Manrique pays his own tribute to the tenacity and creativity of the island’s farmers.

What to see

Tour of the Casa Museo del Campesino
Inspired by César Manrique’s vision, the Casa Museo del Campesino offers an introduction to Lanzarote’s popular culture. The route brings together traditional architecture, agriculture, crafts and gastronomy, helping visitors understand an island shaped by limited rainfall, wind and volcanic soils.

  • Distinctive architecture: The architectural ensemble of the Casa Museo del Campesino shows the close relationship between the island’s inhabitants and their territory. Out of necessity, the farming community learned to create its habitat in an arid, volcanic environment.
  • Monumento a la Fecundidad, also known as the Monumento al Campesino, is a construction more than 15 metres high created by César Manrique in collaboration with master craftsman Jesús Soto. Made with old water tanks, iron and assembled concrete, it is an example of avant-garde art and one of Lanzarote’s main iconographic symbols.
  • The path of camel saddles and farming tools: Along the path leading to the rear buildings, visitors can see different farming implements, camel saddles, a pajero and a soco, a circle of stones used to protect vines, fig trees and mulberry trees.
  • Plaza de los Artesanos: Part of the project of César Manrique, built on an old stone quarry. In this space, Lanzarote’s master craftspeople demonstrate different traditional island techniques, allowing visitors to learn more about their skills.

What to do

The master craftspeople at the Plaza de los Artesanos work to preserve and promote Lanzarote’s local crafts. They offer workshops and display pieces available for sale, giving visitors a closer look at the island’s traditional trades.
