Cultural experiences
Cueva de los Verdes Auditorium
The auditorium occupies a chamber within the volcanic tube. Its acoustic qualities and the closeness between the stage and the audience bring performers and spectators together. It hosts concerts and other cultural events, including classical music, jazz, fusion, opera and flamenco.
Origins
Beneath the Malpaís de la Corona
Cueva de los Verdes is located in the north of Lanzarote and forms part of the volcanic tube created during the eruption of La Corona volcano. Beneath the malpaís lies a natural system of passageways and galleries arranged on different levels.
A volcanic tube stretching to the ocean
The lava flowed down towards the coast while its surface cooled and the interior continued to flow. Once it drained away, it left behind a hollow conduit extending for more than seven kilometres. Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua belong to this same system, which continues beneath the ocean through the section known as the Atlantis Tunnel.
A historic refuge and the origin of the name
During the 16th and 17th centuries, local people used these galleries as a refuge from pirate raids from North Africa. The name is said to come from the surname of a family who used the cave and kept their livestock nearby.
Learning to look at light
In the 1960s, the Lanzarote Island Council commissioned Jesús Soto to adapt the space, which opened to the public in 1964. Soto prepared the path and introduced lighting and ambient sound. The lighting draws attention to the textures, volumes and depths of the rock.
What to see
- Traces of lava: Observe the channels through which lava flowed, the blocks carried by the current and the solidified drops of lava hanging from the ceiling.
- Mineral and salt deposits: Notice how salts and other minerals form deposits on the walls and vaults, changing the texture and tones of the rock.
- Galleries on different levels: The tube is arranged over several levels connected vertically. The visit passes through three main areas: Sala de las Estetas, Garganta de la Muerte and Puerta Mora.
- The abyss of Cueva de los Verdes: An abyss appears during the final section. Follow your guide’s instructions: that is all we can tell you.
What to do
- Explore the cave at a gentle pace: Let the rhythm of the visit, the darkness and the changes in scale draw your attention into the volcanic tube.
- Observe how the rock changes: Notice the ochres, greys, blacks and reds that the lighting reveals across walls, vaults and formations.
- Attend a concert in the Auditorium: Check the cultural calendar for concerts and activities scheduled in this space with its distinctive acoustics.
- Continue to Jameos del Agua: Keep exploring the La Corona volcanic tube at the neighbouring Centre conceived by César Manrique.
