El Diablo in Lanzarote, one of the 6 most impressive restaurants in the world according to National Geographic

El Diablo restaurant, located in the iconic Montañas del Fuego of Lanzarote, has been recognized by the prestigious National Geographic magazine as one of the six most impressive restaurants in the world. This unique venue stands out for its innovative cooking method, using superheated steam from an active volcano in the Timanfaya National Park. This distinctive culinary process, combined with the stunning desolate volcanic landscape that surrounds it, creates an unforgettable dining experience that transports visitors to an almost Martian environment.

The restaurant

Designed by the renowned artist César Manrique in 1970, El Diablo reflects the author’s creative philosophy, based on the harmonious integration of art and nature. Its circular structure with large windows allows diners to enjoy panoramic views of the lava fields, while its minimalist interior decoration highlights the volcanic and dramatic character of the location. Elements such as the «Jardín Muerto», a glass-enclosed space symbolizing the aridity of the environment, and pop art-style decorative details in the bar area, enhance the restaurant’s artistic uniqueness.

In addition to its unique design and location, El Diablo offers a menu featuring traditional Canarian dishes such as papas arrugadas with mojo, meats roasted directly over the geothermal heat from the underground, and desserts like the «Volcán de Lanzarote», made with local ingredients. This culinary approach not only emphasizes the island’s traditional flavors but also makes the most of the natural resources of the National Park.

Recognition by National Geographic

The recognition granted by National Geographic not only positions the restaurant as a world-class gastronomic destination but also represents a valuable promotion for Lanzarote and its Tourist Centres. According to María Dolores Corujo, President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, this award highlights the cultural and tourist significance of the site, while Benjamín Perdomo, CEO of the Tourist Centres, expressed gratitude for the team’s continuous effort to keep Manrique’s vision alive.

El Diablo is much more than a restaurant; it is a masterpiece that combines art, nature, and gastronomy in a unique setting. Its legacy not only celebrates César Manrique’s creativity but also reinforces the cultural and natural identity of Lanzarote as an exceptional tourist destination.
