Standing fifteen metres tall atop Tajaste Rock, Fecundity is one of the most recognisable symbols of the Casa-Museo del Campesino.

Take a closer look at its materials. The cylinders and cubes that shape the sculpture are not newly made pieces. César Manrique repurposed former water tanks and ship components destined for scrap, transforming them into geometric volumes that he assembled into a figure deeply connected to Lanzarote's identity.

The white finish is more than an aesthetic choice. It recalls the traditional whitewashed houses of Lanzarote while also reflecting the artistic avant-garde of the 1960s, particularly the influence of Cubism.

An open work of art 

Now step back and find the right viewpoint. From the restaurant terrace, or from a distance, many visitors recognise the silhouette of a farmer standing beside his camel. Others see something entirely different.

What do you see?

The sculpture is not meant to be admired only from the outside. Walk up to its base and even pass through it, discovering new perspectives as you move around and inside the work.

A tribute to Lanzarote

Fecundidad pays tribute to the people who made agriculture possible in Lanzarote despite extreme conditions: scarce rainfall, constant winds, and volcanic soil that once seemed impossible to cultivate.

Their ingenuity transformed the landscape while preserving the balance between people and nature—one of the core values at the heart of César Manrique’s work and philosophy.

The restoration

The original sculpture suffered severe damage during a windstorm in April 2024.

Following a meticulous restoration carried out by the teams at the Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism, and carefully respecting the original plans and dimensions of the work, Fecundity once again stands proudly atop Tajaste Rock.

Its restoration is a reminder that while materials can be renewed, the message they convey endures.
