12th Lanzarote Biennial: La isla en casa, between the reality and the dream of island identity

Alejandro Krawietz, in Para construir un paraíso, reflects on the duality of living on an island. To live in this environment means managing precarities and recognizing limits, in a constant ebb and flow between the certainty of shipwreck and the hope of rescue. The island moves between utopia and tragedy, a fragile balance that defines its essence.

The landscape as a dialogue between past and future

Architect César Portela, drawing from his experience on a Galician island, faces the challenge of transforming the landscape without losing his creative autonomy. His approach seeks harmony between the pre-existing and the new, blending tradition and modernity like notes in a mint and cinnamon perfume. His vision advocates for an inclusive future where architecture and nature coexist in balance.

A refuge for the stowaway poet

For Virgilio Gutiérrez, architecture is a drawing in constant transformation, a fluid transition between exterior and interior, light and shadow, landscape and refuge. He does not seek closure, but continuity, designing a home that dialogues with its surroundings and evokes emotions. The house is not just a structure, but a manifestation of the island itself, a serene space where natural materials, echoes of the sea, and light intertwine.

Translating the essence of the island

This process of learning and reinterpretation reminds him of the fleeting nature of time. Still, he persists in his desire to capture the essence of the island in his work, understanding architecture not only as construction but as a way of life. To make and create, for him, are forms of gratitude toward the place he inhabits.
