12th Lanzarote Biennale: Entre Volcanes, a dialogue between Paricutín and Lanzarote

Entre Volcanes is the proposal by artist Hannah Collins, curated by Alicia Chillida, for the 12th edition of the Lanzarote Biennale. This open and ongoing project focuses on the Mexican Paricutín volcano (in Purépecha, Parhíkutini, meaning ‘place on the other side’). Over the past two years, the artist has worked on-site, exploring this unique natural phenomenon. On the occasion of the Biennale, Paricutín enters into dialogue with the volcanic specificity of the Canary Islands archipelago.

The project will be on display at La Casa Amarilla from January 31 to March 22, 2025.

Reflection on ecology and sustainability

The project invites reflection on fundamental topics such as ecology, sustainability, and the future of the Earth. It also addresses the mythical value of fire and the observation of the sky from two key points: Lanzarote and Michoacán. These themes align with the premises of the 12th Biennale, creating a conceptual bridge between two territories marked by their volcanic nature.

An essay as a literary work

As part of the project, an essay by the artist documents her interest and dedication to these topics. This text, reminiscent of the travel narratives of 19th-century European explorers, could serve as the prologue to the exhibition. This literary approach adds a narrative dimension that complements the visual and conceptual experience of the work.

The human dimension of Paricutín

The Paricutín volcano takes on a humanized dimension in the mindset of the inhabitants of Michoacán, who experienced its eruption in 1943. This volcano, unique in the world for its birth and its eruption lasting nine years, eleven days, and ten hours, marked a significant event in the history of volcanology. The connection between the historical, scientific, and mythical aspects of Paricutín resonates with the volcanic landscapes and geological history of Lanzarote.
